The ads actually support this site, as you may well know. When we click on them it helps defray the cost for Simon, the site's owner.
Further, they don't really interfere with one's experience on the site, as pop-up ads do on other sites. I'd say having ads on the borders are okay. It's a fair trade-off for having free access to this forum.
