We often have threads about what type of funeral/burial/epitaph we would like. Lately I've been drawn to the idea of a simple burial with a pine coffin so I could return quickly and naturally to the earth. I'd like something very personal and meanigful. I thought is was a
"hairbrained" idea, but it seems others share my thoughts and there is quite a movement towards natural burials. The link above is an example of what I'm speaking of.

In addition to being earth friendly , it is also cost effective. A green burial costs about half what a traditional burial would.

So. I was thinking, what if I bought up some scenic tracts of land and opened my own green burial ground. What would it take to run? A team of groundskeepers, grave diggers, a website and some advertising, an accountant...What else?

What do you think? Does it sound like a good business idea (financially and otherwise), or a pain in the ass?

I think typically people who opt for a burial as opposed to cremation would not necessarily be attracted to the idea but that's just me.

I have read articles about green burials before and I, too, have found it rather appealing for me. I have NEVER ever considered

cremation, while everybody else in my family has chosen that route. But the thought of a natural burial in a pine

box that would over time also decompose into the earth sounds much more natural to me. I like the idea.

This is the Jewish tradition of burial. Pine box with no cement vault.

I guess it depends on the country that you are living in.

In the UK there are many rules about cemeteries (even wildflower cemeteries or woodland cemeteries) - such as proximity to the watercourse etc.

In the UK cemeteries employ attendants in order to greet the funeral and escort the cortege to the graveside. Then there will be some admin involved in filing the paperwork.

It is a large outlay for the expense of land and that is not something that can be recouped quickly unless you try to market graves in a way that allows people to choose their own before they die - but even then it is slow.

    Thanks AO!

A wildflower cemetary! How lovely! Almost makes want to be dead!
