Question: Other than a "library card"...what are the advantages that an organization would have as an NGO with the UN? Are there priviledges and/or protections offered by this membership? Surely, there are other reasons to obtain this status other than access to the UN library--what would they be?

Howdy tomboy,
Welcome, are you a tom who is a boy, or a girl who is a tomboy? I'm a woman (really) who was a tomboy. Nice to meet you.
If you look under the heading of scandals & coverups, you'll find a lot about the UN - and why it would be important to understand implications if you're a jw. The average worldly person would say "so what?" But the average person doesn't teach others, and believe themselves, that the UN is the Scarlet Covered Wild Beast of Revelation.
Please take a look around, even go to the UN website. It's factual and a fascinating read of WTBTS duplicity at it's finest.

ps: There is a current thread - about 25 pages long - which gives all data. Plus, go to Watchtower Observer, Freeminds, and other sites for further documented information.

tomboy,
Let me add my warm welcome.
You know how the WTS madly rails against the US government (calling it part of the beast/claiming it's under the direct control of Satan), however, has no qualm about dishonorably running and enveloping herself in its constitution any time it feels the least bit threatened, or in order to further its religious/corporate agenda? I believe they're attempting to establish the same kind of love/hate relationship with the U.N. was to attempt to foster p.r. with the very organization they refer to as "the beast". One has only to look at what's going on in the more (generally speaking) educated developed world vs. the third world (where the UN is very active). WTS numbers are drying up, and they lose their chokehold on people's everyday lives where people have more access to education. They need fresh, naive blood, if they are going to keep growth up, without relinquishing too much power over individuals. The UN is a growing force, on the global scene, and fostering relations will at least make gaining and keeping access to thirdworld countries and countries that are less than favorable to religious freedom. In other words, they are trying to play both sides of the fence--kissing you know what of the very people they rail against. It's the best of both worlds (kind of like they attempted to do with the Nazi's)--they get to smell like roses to the unsuspecting gov'ts (who don't know or care enough about this org to look into what it teaches about them)--all the while milking their services and protection, while keeping the rank and file ignorant of these relations with the beasts, and continuing to perpetuate the belief that they're the most hated, persecuted people on earth and ergo god's only chosen people.
It's really quite vomitous and dishonorable for a group that sets itself out to be god's only representative on earth. Kind of makes one wonder about the god they represent.
Peace,

Tom Boy,
Please go to http://www.geocities.com/plowbitch69/
Its NOT a MEMBERSHIP. Only a country can be a "member". It is an official "association" and the DPI does consider it a "partnership".
Read the material. You will also read about the criteria and what the "associated" NGOs get with DPI.
As for what the Watchtower got out of it. Read the big UN threads on what we spectualte they got out of it.
