Just wondering if anyone has teenagers with adhd, and are they on meds? My son has it but always refrain the meds. He just met someone who said there are so many new drugs and at a low dose it just keeps you on task. He wants to look into and thought you guys might have an opinion. Thanks as always...Champ
ADHD meds

My daughter was started on meds when she was flunking the last qtr of 1st grade- Concerta was our choice 4 years ago ( a time release type of ritalin) and she was just switched to a newer drug Vyvanse. Cognitive testing on Concerta was done before the switch and the new drug showed over a 10% test score improvement and this drug does not wear off after 4 or 5 hours. She has just started piano lessons- her own idea- and this was something she wouldn't have been able to do before the switch. Good luck- the main advantage of meds in my opinion, is to prevent poor self esteem and nip negative behavior in the bud. She has been able to achieve a school citizenship award and perfect attendance for the last three years, too. Parents of children in her peer group who have refused to consider ADHD medicines are now dealing with major behavioral issues. Counseling in my opinion is of little value to these kids unless they can get help from medicine for their lack of focus/concentration.

......has some interesting thoughts regarding AHDH.....
Beyond that my family had bad experiences with Ritalin.
Ultimately my cousin took her son to a behaviorist.......I am happy to say he is a well adjusted young man of 24 who is pursuing his masters in engineering, planning on joining the peace corp after graduation.
