401K vs University Education

Here's something I thought about this morning that made me mad. The WTS is so anti-education now, saying the "end is so close" "deep in the last days" etc (tm) ...why have they not come down on having retirement plans? I know many elders that work for big companies (younger guys in their 40s), they are planning for their future by investing etc....WHAT!? Don't they have faith, that the end is near? The brother up on stage touting the evils of wasting time getting a degree also had $140 taken out of his check that week towards his 401k...why didn't he just put that in the WWWork $ box? towards "kindom interests" (tm)

    Freaking unbelievable!

    Tresdecu rant complete...signing off...

Agreed, but the fact is many of the active jw are not in the financial position to make a contribution to a retirement plan. My wife's family does not have one penny stashed away for retirement, and they are in their upper 50s by now.....guess hoping for the paradise earth still.

You're right...unfortunately. I'm sure the ones that have retirement are a small minority. Still, thinking about the double standard bothered me.

I'm surprised the Society has not mildly hinted at the absurdity of saving for a retirement when the end is so close...

I was at about two hours of the DC with my wife a few weeks ago and I was listening to hear this along with the bashes on education since we are 'so close to the end', never did hear it. Would seem to be a match to almost everything else that they preach, but one must also look at the amount of money that the WTS gets from the estates of those "millions now living who DO die".

Yeah, but a 401(k), if not all spent by the retiree, can be bequeathed to the society upon death....

Unlike a college eductation, retirement plans don't cause evil indpendent thinking.

I wish I could have stayed at a company with a great retirement plan! Unfortunately, I was with a company that downsized (thank you, Jack Welsh, you bastard!) I would have life made in the shade with my investments. If it wasn't for the Organization's goadings, I would have gone on when younger, and got my degree in Mechanical Engineering. My apprenticeship as a Toolmaker would have given me my first year toward the degree.

A 401K is a great thing. Education is a great thing. Both together are the best. I am going to have to really bump up saving to have a decent retirement.

But never naysay the education. It was as much about esteem building as it was about making a better income.

Does The Watchtower really care about the individual's financial well being?

    I don't think so.
