I thoughts some might find this very interesting.

The Kogi are an indigenous people living in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains of northern Colombia, in South America.

They are the only civilisation to have survived the Spanish conquests and to have kept their individuality. They are perhaps the only indigenous people in the world who, because of the particular nature of their surroundings, have been able to keep themselves apart and sustain their culture inviolate. And not only that.

The one anthropologist who managed to study them in the 1940's and 50's concluded that though they are similar in some ways to the other Indian peoples around the Caribbean, northern Central America and south to the Andes, there are such profound differences that "in the end the Kogi stand alone".

Thank you for the link. My take: I find it difficult to relate to the Kogi culture. The presentation feels rather canned and heavy handed. I'm not sure whether that is because the culture itself is in decline from within or the documentary crew had an agenda and used these people to further that agenda. Maybe it is a combination of both.

Anyway, there are indigenous cultures throughout the world that still retain a strong connection to natural ecosystems. You might enjoy watching the movie "Ten Canoes" which provides a glimpse of Australian aboriginal culture.

In the past year I read Jared Diamond's "Collapse." What it showed me is that even humans who live in pre-industrial cultures have experienced societal collapse due to environmental causes. Modern industrial civilization will be no different in the long run. I personally would love to see how things work out by 2100.

    Dave,

What I found most interesting is the translation of ideas into english and how they keep special children from birth in a dark place for 9 years with a special diet, and only the preist as their connection to the world of light outside. Only an idea of what it is like in the outside world of light. I just can't imagine what it would be like to see the outside world for the first time and the effect that would have on the psychi.
