    HALLOWEEN CANDY RECALLED

(you can verify this on snopes: http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/coins.asp)
There is a new warning put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency....Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that has caused many infant deaths in china. These candies are sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. please make sure to check your childrens halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM EAT THE PIRATE COINS (you know the ones wrapped in the shiny gold foil)and please let other parents know about this!

Be careful but have a fun and Happy Halloween!

Well, here's a hijack of my own thread:

A link at the bottom of the Snopes link gave this info from Sherwood Brands (I will assume the importer of the product):

    http://www.sherwoodbrands.com/Safety/productsafety1.html

Notice to our Customers regarding the Safety of our Candy Products Imported from China to the USA.

The safety of our products is our first priority. Customers can be assured that we have an unwavering commitment to test and assure the safety of all our products. Please note that we have not had any products containing melamine recalled in the U.S. Immediately upon the issuance of a warning by FDA about possible melamine contamination in milk-containing products from China we began to work with independent labs to confirm our products are free of melamine. Additionally, Sherwood Brands has not received any chocolate in the U.S. from China since the report on melamine. We understand that any product that may contain milk or milk proteins is being tested upon entry by the FDA. If you have questions, please email us at [email protected] .

If you are concerned about the coins recalled in Canada, please note this was an isolated situation in Canada only. These coins were not sold or shipped into the US market. Those coins were produced before the melamine warning was issued. Immediately upon notification of Melamine warning, Sherwood stopped all production and shipments. All products now shipped to both Canada and the United States are first tested for the absence of melamine prior to shipment.

Thank you for your understanding. Above all our #1 concern is our customer safety and satisfaction.

This re-opens the question of food and drug quality between USA and Canada. Are US restrictions, regulations and standards higher than that of Canada?

    -Aude.

If Sherwood brands is a Canadian company, I can imagine that perhaps it had some candy on the shelves in Canada when the melamine warning came out. They probably pulled all their candy but some people had already bought it. Perhaps they pulled their shipments so that no product got shipped to the US.

That is one reason I stick with the big brands in candy. Hersheys, Nestle, and M&M/Mars seem to put out the best quality, using real chocolate and other real ingredients instead of hydrogenated soy and rapeseed (rape?) oils and artificial flavors (Neotame, perhaps).

At least that way I know all they have is high fructose corn syrup, sodium caseinate, and possibly real sugar and real fat. None of the fake crap that could be even more poison than what the big companies use--of course, organic chocolate with Stevia would be even better (though not as cost effective or as much of a variety).
