  This past weekend I was speaking to a friend who attends the hall that I once did in northern Illinois.
  We were catching up on the latest news regarding the mass disfellowshipping (53) of teenagers that happened in the area, and she shared
  with me a very disturbing comment made by an elder from her hall.
  They were talking about the DFing and he said that they needed to be cast out, it was akin to "scourging" and hopefully they would wake up and realize what they had done.
  The dictionary defines scourging as :(from Italian scoriada, from Latin excoriare = "to flay" and corium = "skin") is a whip or lash, especially a multi-thong type used to inflict severe corporal punishment or self-mortification on the back.
  
  Yes Jesus was scourged,,, but he was an adult in his 30's.
  Going along with this elders mentality, perhaps he should have been whipped when he got lost at the temple as a boy.
  Could you imagine how the story would be if he was whipped instead of just talked to?
  My point here is what gives this guy who is
  1) an elder
  2)the congregation PO
  3) a father himself
  the right to make a comment like this? Sounds kinda creepy to me. he seems more focused on being right and enforcing the "law" of the WT
  society than actually helping the kids. What about the scripture that talks about the Shepard who leaves the flock to go and search for the lost sheep?
  OK, maybe the kids were totally unappreciative, but they are teenagers. Maybe helping them, and looking for avenues to assist them would be more productive in the future. But gloating in a weird way that they need to be whipped,does not seem to be a very loving expression from this guy!

  It's the same old story does fear, guilt or brute force ever surpass love and concern ? Even if

  these tactics at first appear to work it's usually only because a form of bribery or worse still a broken spirit ! ...

  2)the congregation PO
  3) a father himself

  1) Elders do pretty much as they damn well please.

  2) Congregation POs are generally arrogant and used to speaking with an authoritative tone.

  3) JW fathers are generally autocratic in their behavior and disciplinary tactics.

  It is very creeepy but it sounds to me like he is a typical elder with control issues. They are taught to put appearances above everything else and in reality they show none of Christ's compassion or wisdom in any of their official decisions, so what is said in an everyday conversation is just a reflection of that. Nothing is above the wt in their minds.

  When my "worldly" neighbors or friends have a problem with one of their children they handle it within their family, maybe confide in a few friends that will genuinely try to help. The problems are never really huge because they allow their children to move through the normal stages of development. They usually get the kid back on track. But in the org if your child has a problem everyone knows about it, gossips about it and remembers it forever. You are right it's not loving and it sure doesn't make it easy for them to return to the fold.

  I forgot to mention that this happened in one circuit, not one hall.
  
  And so far it sounds like pornia and drinking.

  Hopefully that is 53 young people who will not go back and have the chance to live their lives normally.

  And yes it sounds like that elder is an a**hole.
