Purple colour and Minnesota?

I don't know if I'm going off on a tangent but is there a link between Minnesota and the colour purple.
I'm thinking Prince and the Minnesota Vikings.
Looked at wiki and can't see any link but I thought I'd try here.

Sit outside on a bus station in any Twin Cities neighborhood in January and you'll understand the connection between Minnesota and purple just by looking at your lips. JK. I really don't know the connection between the two colors. Might be a coincidence.
