Kate is saying that it is the avatars of the last few people who posted on that topic.
You used to see who was the last poster on a thread on the old site, now you can see the last few posters.

yes cultbegone--those are the ones i mean--1 against each individual reply--in your case it looks like a green and white face of squares

I think you mean the ones in the topic, against each reply.
They are a visual hash of the users IP address - it shows if someone is posting from the same IP but using two different accounts (same pattern) or if the hash is changing each time then someone may be going through anonymous proxies.
