My wife was watching a movie on Lifetime called "In God's Country" about a religious cult. It gave me the perfect opportunity to tell her the identifying marks of a cult.

I said, "Cults claim they have a direct pipeline to God, that everyone outside of their group is under the influence of Satan, and they keep people in line by practicing shunning." You should have seen the look on her face. She got it!

I left it at that not wanting her programming to kick in and make her turn against me.

Awesome! I was able to do the same with a JW acquaintence, but he just dismissed it. He reasoned that it is ok for the JWs to practice such behavior because they really did have the truth, and those actions are condoned and encouraged by scripture.

This is the same JW that said "the end justifies the means" when I asked him about the Society flip-flopping on issues like organ transplantation. Apparently while it was forbidden this actually strengthened the faith of the believers in some way unknown to me. Sigh....

Wait a minute, I thought Lifetime only had shows with titles like " Vagina Betrayed "

Yeah drw, like Steve Hassan says, they can see the marks of a cult in other groups, but not in their own.

Great job!! This is the way to help people out of the WT without triggering all the defenses to go up. Let us know if your tactics eventually pay off.
