A (seemingly) needless tragedy followed by a sick crime.

Bahamas police have detained a local lawmaker and an ambulance driver in an alleged extortion plot against John Travolta.

Supposedly they claimed to have photographed the dying Scientologist boy and tried to blackmail the Travoltas with it.

It is sad that there are people in this world who try to take advantage of people who are suffering. The pain that the Travoltas are feeling over their loss is now compounded knowing that there are those who are so heartless to be able to do such terrible things, let alone think about it. May the Travoltas eventually find peace as their wounds start to heal. I don't understand why people can be so cruel.

Bahamas Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater was charged with two counts of abatement to extort and conspiracy to extort, then released on 40,000 dollar bail, authorities said. She has resigned. Police also had detained ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne and former tourism minister Obie Wilchcombe. Lightbourne is still in custody but Wilchcombe has since been released pending further investigation. The parliamentarian has described himself as a friend of Travolta who was with the actor shortly after his son died. Britain's Daily Mail reports that once the alleged extortionists made their demands clear, Travolta contacted his lawyers, who then flew to the Bahamas to meet with the culprits. TMZ reports that the monetary amount being asked was $20 million. They also claim that the extortion plot is not over a photo, but the "circumstances surrounding Jett's death."

The Daily Mail claims the extortion plot is based around a photograph of Jett taken in the hospital on a cell phone.

Bahamas senator accused in Travolta plot resigns

NASSAU, Bahamas -A Bahamas senator accused of trying to extort money from actor John Travolta after his son's death resigned on Saturday and vowed to prove her innocence. Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater, an attorney from Grand Bahama, said she plans to fight "untrue and unfair charges" stemming from actions she took as a lawyer. "How these innocent actions can be so misconstrued, so perversely twisted to mean something other than it was, is a mystery," she said without providing more details.
