    Greetings and I-wish-you-a-day-free-of-leg-cramps:

I jumped out of bed 15 minutes ago doing the Charley Horse Stomp and remembered that I forgot to thank Ninja, our wee slip of a lad, for his beautiful fogscape. So there ... I'm not hijacking my own thread cuz it's in the title.

Oh, has the above ever happened to you (minus the Ninja-fog part)?

    Huh?

    CoCo's Got Cramps

A muscle cramp is a sudden, uncontrolled contraction of a muscle. This type of pain is most commonly experienced in the legs, and therefore often called a leg cramp or a "charley horse."

Leg cramps occur when the muscle suddenly and forcefully contracts. The most common muscles to contract in this manner are muscles that cross two joints. These muscles include the calf (crossing the ankle and knee), the hamstring (crossing the knee and hip), and the quadriceps (also crossing the knee and hip).

Leg cramps usually last less than one minute, but may last several minutes before the contraction subsides. In some patients, the leg cramps occur primarily at night, and can awaken the patient from sleep.

Magnesium (500mg) is the magic word.

You can find it most anywhere.

I think it's more beneficial when you take it ever evening before bed. You have to be rather consistent because you never know when they are going to happen.

    Dear cameo:

    Thanks much for that suggestion!

What I read on the web page cited indicates that I may have been dehydrated and overly-exercised too (unusually high level of yard clean up and moving of heavy objects lately).

I know where to find magnesium.

    Gratefully,

I was told it was a lack of potassium that causes the cramps. I hardly ever have this happen anymore since I started eating bananas on an almost daily basis. I also drink a lot of water.

    Where is the ninja fog?

    Thanks, Ninj, for the thoughts!

Guess I was overcast with other things when I mist out thanking you earlier. Like me to be in a perpetual fog. I'm such a drip.

Dear CoCo! Sorry you were so rudely and painfully awakened (not Ninja, the cramps, and not to be confused with The Cramps, the band...)

Okay, I can't believe I'm putting this out there, but anything for you, Dear CoCo. I just heard about this folk remedy from acquaintences of mine, and I made an ardent attempt to debunk it, because it just doesn't make any sense. If this does work, and folks swear that it does indeed, I would just like to know how and why it works. Nevertheless, it is certainly worth a try...

My dad used a little quinine water in his vodka for years to stop the cramps.

He has since switched to scotch and swears by the bar of soap in his bed.

    Dears Baba and Blithe:

I launder and bathe with IVORY, so I'm halfway there, as it were. I used to drink quinine water daily but got out of the habit. I have to remind myself to drink more water - I forget.

Three sheets to the wind, er, IVORY (sans the vodka).

    Gratefully,

    CoCo
