If not, how do they support themselves/provide for their medical care? I know they are (were) given stipends/green handshakes and have a nurse/dr on staff, but this is not enough to sustain a person.
Are Bethelites on welfare and Medicaid?

I doubt it. In Ohio where I live, childless adults aren't eligible for welfare, and Medicaid is only offered to adults with disabilities or who are medication dependent.

There are doctors and dentists on staff. They can handle 95% of the cases that come to them - mostly routine checkups and basic stuff.
If anyone needs surgery or more specialized care, they go offsite - likely to a local hospital. I believe the Society is self-insured - they will pay the medical bills for their staff.
Of course, if anyone contracts a costly chronic condition, they are booted out. The wife of a Bethelite I know contracted lupus - after a few months of costly treatments, they were asked to leave.

Wow! That must have left them in a bad way. Fired from their jobs, forced to move from their home, with no insurance and a pre-existing chronic health condition. Unbelievable. Would they have any recourse, like a lawsuit? I'm curious, are they still JWs after that treatment?
How sad. And from the one true religion that is recognized by the love they have among themselves, too.

Current Beth Hellites are not allowed to take Welfare, since they took a vow of poverty. But, once they leave Beth Hell, they almost always need it because they are thrown out without anything.
And, yes they are more likely to develop medical conditions than the average worldly person, even with smoking by worldly people. They are not allowed to sleep without their dose of guilt, they are put through having to do field circus on top of their jobs that take 44 hours a week, they have to commute excessively for boasting sessions and field circus, and they are supposed to be "exemplary" (meaning most minor "offenses" are off limits or they get kicked out of Beth Hell for breaking the rules). And that can easily be worse for one than smoking.

So if a Bethelite needs care outside Bethel, then the wts pays for it?
I could believe the 95% estimation if we eliminate most necessary care. Colonoscopies at age 50+, mammograms at age 35+, heart caths for people who need it, etc........all this is really expensive stuff. Why would wts want to pay for this out of pocket--seems like a dumb business move.
Oh I get it.......they kick people out who need this stuff done.
Would they have any recourse, like a lawsuit?
Not unless the wts signed a contract agreeing to something they failed to deliver.

Interesting. Is there data on this?

I'm sure there was something in the fine print of the paperwork they signed when entering Bethel which prevents this. Even if not, what JW would ever sue "mother"?

Oh absolutely. They are the type that feel obligated to always be "encouraging" when talking to others, so if you ask them about it, they will gush about the "wonderful opportunity we had to serve in Bethel", and now "Jehovah has opened another door of service for us", and "oh how wonderful Jehovah is", and on and on and on.
One is left with the impression that if their Bethel supervisors had hacked off their hands with machetes, they would "praise Jehovah for allowing us to appreciate how much better we will feel in the new system, when we grow back our new hands. Isn't the organization wonderful?"
