I need to get surgery for my... *ahem* injury in 2 days and I'm so nervous. I'll be ok. I'll post a message from the hospital after the surgery is over. Later!
This drives me *nuts*

you will be fine.
After having a few really lousy nurses..these are things I remember.
There are supposed to be some rules on "how many times they can stick you."
Here, it is supposed to be that they cannot make more than 3 attempts to "stick you".
If they can't get the (main) needle in for your IV...they are supposed to call someone else in to stick. Most will not do this until you request it and they will continue to stick you till you are sore and full of holes. Meanwhile, they will try to blame you for having lousy veins.
From now on: If the nurse cannot get the needle in on the second try...I say STOP. NO MORE. YOU GET THE FLOOR NURSE! DO NOT TOUCH ME!!! Always make them get a SUPERIOUR...Not a co-worker!! Ask for a certified registered nurse.
(As you can see, I had a very bad experience in the past. More than once. So now I know the rules and I stand my ground!)
If the floor nurse cannot get the needle in within two sticks. Then, you tell her you want to see the Director of Nursing. ("The DON")
That will put the fear of god into most of them.
What happens if you sit back and be Mr. NiceGuy and keep letting them practice on you, is that after so many attempts and holes, they will have to call in a PIC nurse to run a special line which is risky.
I hope nothing like this happens to you, Drew. But people who are inexperienced with these procedures often get slightly abused.

Aww, buddy. W/ all you've been thru and a bike accident? Damn. Harsh. Make sure and mark the injured side w/ a sharpie so they don't operate on the wrong side, it happens more than you think.
