  Oh my word. My first instinct is that the father killed them, but now I'm not sure. I can't understand why the sheriff is covering this up.

  There was conjecture in later years that the two boys were being abused and that either the father killed them to stop them revealing it, or they killed themselves because they could no longer endure it.
