Uzbekistan - reason for US interest in Afghanistan

    ???? Do you think????

Uzbekistan has allowed the US a share in its oil production and a pipeline had been agreed to be built that would pass through Afghanistan. The present problems threaten that. Uzbekistan is land-locked and cannot sell its oil through any other means. The oil reserves in that country are considerable and could be more than the other countries like Kuwait.

Oil is a big deal and the US would love to get their hands on this oil and not have to rely on 'Arabia'. Of course all oil will run out at sometime...but the US can use up everyone elses before using its own. In that time oil will be power.

There are the terrorist issues but oil is a big factor in US foreign policy. No different today.

There is a lot NOT being said about this. I posted to this effect months ago. Think huge growing markets in japan, and especially india and china. A 48 inch pipeline has been scheduled for years, to go through afghanistan.

I think that the US is primarily "interested" in Afghanistan because that is where bin Laden gets his mail. If UBL sought refuge at the North Pole, we'd be at the North Pole.

Nathan put it best. As I recall there were talks with the Taliban about that pipeline in the past, and those talks had not failed. Remember, the U.S. offered before the world to leave the Taliban be if they handed over UBL. I feel a little ashamed about this offer, but if unilateral invasions because of human rights violations were the international norm, France would have invaded Texas long ago to free those on its death row.

A pipeline has been talked about but NEVER scheduled to go through Afghanistan. With the political situation in that county in such a state of disarray I doubt any oil companies are going to be willing to invest much money in Afghanistan. A more likely solution would be to run the pipeline through the Soviet Union. This is unfortunate for the Afghan people; an oil pipeline would provide much needed revenue for their county.

Of course oil is a big deal to American foreign policy however in this case oil is an insignificant factor in determining Americas course of Action.

    FYI:
Where American gets their oil (just the biggest providers I left out some of the smaller ones):

    OPEC
    Iraq-------------613
    Nigeria----------887
    Saudi Arabia-----1556
    Venezuela--------1519

    Total OPEC = 5136

    NON OPEC
    Canada-----------1686
    Columbia---------332
    Mexico-----------1359
    Norway-----------332
    United Kingdom---330

    Total Non OPEC = 5957

About 50% of our gas is provided Domestically.
