Uzbekistan has allowed the US a share in its oil production and a pipeline had been agreed to be built that would pass through Afghanistan. The present problems threaten that. Uzbekistan is land-locked and cannot sell its oil through any other means. The oil reserves in that country are considerable and could be more than the other countries like Kuwait.
Oil is a big deal and the US would love to get their hands on this oil and not have to rely on 'Arabia'. Of course all oil will run out at sometime...but the US can use up everyone elses before using its own. In that time oil will be power.
There are the terrorist issues but oil is a big factor in US foreign policy. No different today.
