My husband works for a company that works for GM, which is their main client. His company filed bankruptcy a few years ago, and it meant frozen wages, elimination of overtime, and a weakening of the union in the part of the company that's unionized. He'll probaby be facing lay off soon, but it has little to do with GM's bankruptcy and more to do with the slow down in sales.

Two of my sons work for GM dealerships . One is a master GM tech . They are worried about their dealerships going under .As it is right now they are both still working ,but feeling the crunch .
My oldest son says he will just have to roll with the punches ,but is considering now may be the time to change careers . The youngest son is currently looking into new job opportunities .

Our area is automotive. Most industry is already affected by the GM/Chrysler issues here. Our unemployment rate is in the teens, and has been for a few months now.
That said - in a capitalistic society, as painful as it may be, the best course is to allow companies to succeed/fail based on it's ability to fill the economic needs of the nation. Evolutionary pain is part of the process, unfortunately.
I do not work directly for the auto industry - but everyone in this area is very affected by what happens next. We are 50% unemployed in our home, and our belt may have to continue to tighten.
