The Trinity Video...will JW's watch it?

I had my extremist jw sister and her husband over the other day because I'd asked some questions regarding the new light and 'the generation'. I've never heard her husband speak so much and I wish you could've seen how condescending they were. "Oh Homeschool.....hmmmm....let me see how I can explain this so YOU can understand" (I was thinking 'oh boy, you have no idea')....

There's a thread on here about the showdown going on about the Trinity & it's on YouTube. It fascinated me....so much so that I called my sister and left a message telling her about the video. I said "theres a guy whose never been a jw having a debate with two jw's about the trinity. Now I'm more confused than ever. Would you guys take a look at it and explain in further detail why you guys dont believe in it?"

She said, "homeschool, some time ago, you said you didn't even believe in the bible. Do you have an opinion one way or the other on the trinity? Why do you even care?" so I explained that I'm ready to open my mind and start looking for some answers these days.

What do you think? Should I have not mentioned the video? It's not like its an 'apostate' video....the guy was never a witness.

Focusing just on the doctranal teachings of JWs is pretty much a loose/loose situation in my book. I saw the video and really was not all that impressed. The JW in the video is just going to leave that conversation, do his "research" to prove that he really is right (proving the other guy wrong), and go back to do it all over again.

It's the unquestioned assumptions that really drive me crazy. Using proof texts to back up an argument simply creates an endless opportunity for people to interpret the Bible however they want. Each book has to be taken into context. Don't put ideas on top of the Bible that just arn't there, such as the idea there is "one major theme" that runs through all the books.

    Hi,

I dunno, the dude had a lot of original "witness" books and bibles and knew his WT theology. My guess was he was a former JW. I shouldn't worry about that though. I think it is good you mentioned the vid. Your sister might leave before you ;)

    All the best,

    Stephen

I too think you're better off focusing on smaller things. Probably egotistical of me, but try some questions from my series. www.youtube.com/timkilgore you'll be able to ask a bunch of questions without ever having to get into a doctrinal discussion with JWs at all.

I don't know why I would. I researched the history of this idea years ago and republished some works dealing with this issue and I've found that though some clever rhetoric exists on both sides, the principle of simplicity and clarity suggests that the Trinity doctrine is not what is represented by the scriptures.

As regards what's put forth as "The Trinity Doctrine" I've found it to be:

Defined in various ways with no agreed upon definition.

Religiously obscurantist if it were true, as the God represented by it would be even more of a douchebag than he already appears to be at present.

I find it on the whole just a mildly interesting psychological study, not at all enlightening in any way and furthermore I find that those whose eyes are moist with these religious ideas I find to be rather dull and uninteresting people who haven't realized that the concept of a creator is a concept which still has no rational framework which makes sense. The idea that God is "Love" is just a funky shell-game where that term gets moved around and redefined and because this is so those who push that as an explanation come off like doped up idiots.

ummmmmm, not quite sure what you are saying, gubberning ....are you calling ME an idiot? When/if my sister looks at the video, I wasn't planning on saying "HA! SEE??! You're wrong and the dude on the video is right! HA!!!"..... I just wanted to introduce the difference of opinion from somebody who seems 'in control', and not a raging apostate. The fact that he has all those old books does not tell me that he used to be a jw. I don't really know of any jw's who still have all of those books....he just seemed like a very passionate man who wants to show the jw's that they don't know what they're talking about.
