has told me two things which militate against the same:

    1. People aren't that smart.

    2. People can't keep secrets.

    P.S.

I suspect the psychology of those who do believe in these is partly affected by their experience of dealing with people consistently smarter than themselves coupled with a greater need for drama.

I also believe that conspiracy buffs are mild schizophrenics with paranoid delusions.

There are factual, proved, historical conspiracies: Lincoln's assasination; the Teapot Dome scandal; the Soviet spying and obtaining of how to detonate a nuclear bomb in 1949; Watergate; Iran/contra; and, most recently, the attack on Sept. 11, 2001 by 19 Arab terrorists in New York and Washington which was planned years in advance.

In order to believe and accept a conspiracy, one needs data, facts, a direct timeline, a clear narrative that outlines not only the individuals involved but the means, motive and means of executing the conspiratorial plan.

Tex, none of those examples were revealed to be conspiracies by conspiracy theorists.

If you can cite a single example of a conspiracy theory which was later proven to be true thanks to the untiring efforts of the conspiracy theorist, I'll be surprised.

Conspiracy theorists are like those individuals who read intentionality into natural processes. Patterns of behavior will form in groups of people NOT because they are conspiring with each other in any sort of sentient way, but rather because all systems form recognizable patterns.

    Why are my ears burning?

When you look back at history--- the conspiracies reveal themselves in hindsight. Those who learn from history and begin to recognize the "patterns" and how these things have been contrived usually have heightened perception.

Good conspiracy theorists do dig for connections and proof to link what they see developing. Perhaps these people think deeper thoughts, are more intuitive and more far sighted than others who prefer the simplicity of taking things at face value.

The rooftop dwellers have a better view. You have to raise above the crowd to see what's causing the commotion!
