I went to see the new Michael Mann film, Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp, yesterday.

I enjoyed it and I'll give it 3 out of 4 stars.

It's a gangster film about John Dillinger, infamous bank robber and Public Enemy #1 to J. Edgar Hoover, in the post-Capone days.

Very well-made film, but I didn't really connect emotionally with any of the characters. The costumes/exteriors/Tommy Guns were flawless, but it was hard to understand the motivations of the characters enough to care about their fates.

It was great to see Depp playing a traditional character for a change. He is a very gifted actor. The Oscar-winning, French actress, Marion Cotillard plays Depp's love interest. She is beautiful and very talented. She is the one character the audience will likely sympathize with.

Christian Bale and Billy Crudup give fine performances, too.

Anyone else see it? What did you think?

DISCLOSURE: My favorite Depp movies are Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco and the first Pirates movie.

I saw it and liked it. But I have read lots of books and seen just about every Documentary on Dillinger so it was a tad anti climatic for me.

BTW if you liked Gilbert Grape my wife and I lived in the town it was filmed in and in fact we lived across the street from the court house they used for that movie.
