Each man's death diminishes me ...

A friend has died. Another has gone missing; we are hoping and praying that he is still alive. John Donne's immortal poem comes to mind:

    No man is an island,
    Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
    Or of thine friend's were.
    Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
    Therefore, send not to know
    For whom the bell tolls,
    It tolls for thee.

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so,
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure: then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
    And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell;
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

    -- John Donne

Thanks for the reminder. I have been drflected more toward the lower life forms, for, they too, each one, while not as valuable as the human, has also a spark of the divine. Each animal, bug and blade of grass is a developing drop of spirit. That within the human is the most higjhly developed, and therefore the most valuable.

Ps, sorry about yourf friend. Hope he shows up.

May your friend have found "his soul's delivery" to reveal a happiness beyond compare...may he have peace and rest.

May your other friend be found well and sound on this side of Death's shadow, that you may rejoice in your discovery of him and treasure him in his human form.

I wish you peace and comfort in these times...knowing your heart is weighed down and your mind much troubled. May God comfort you. ( I don't remember your stand on belief in God, but you know I say it with all good and heartfelt intention for your happiness.)

One short sleep past, we wake eternally,And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

I believe this is how it's going to be.

I'm hoping for a favorable outcome, but may your heart find peace to deal with whatever turn this takes, Coco.

I have always loved the John Donne poem. It has inspired the title of the Hemmingway novel 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and a great Simon and Grafunkel song ; 'I am Rock'.

Beautiful poem, Coco. Sorry about your loss and good wishes for your other friend. I sure hope that death is only a short sleep and the other side is restful.

I don't believe that the spark of the divine, that Satanus speaks of, can ever really be destroyed.

    Dear Friends,

I have just received an e-mail stating that the lost soul was found - alive! His confused mental state may have led to his wandering off from the group he was with last week. I have no details other than friends and family are overjoyed and grateful that God heard their prayers.

Thanks again for your kind thoughts.

    Love,

    CoCo
