Spiritism v. Spirituality

What's the difference between praying to a deity and summoning a spirit? You want an answer both ways. So, what makes one good and one bad?

Why is one okay and the other is not? Really, when you pray to a deity you are attempting to contact a spirit, right? Isn't that spiritism?

Think about it, White Dove, along with your questions: how is the JW fear of demons and demons attaching themselves to objects, different from superstition?

I think it's spiritism when you try to get them to talk back, give you information, etc. Whereas prayer is a one-way communication.

Assuming for a minute that any of it is real, I guess the danger with trying to establish a two-way communication with a spirit is that you wouldn't know for sure who you're really talking to. If it's just a prayer, God can take care of it in his own way as he sees fit.

It's all in the same field, imo. If there is REAL spirituality, then the door is open to the spirit world. Real spirituality is only possible for people who can axcess their psychic ability. Can't do that? You're not spiritual. A truly spiritual person may also find out that there is no wt/bible/god.

Don't theists believe they have a personal relationship with their god? Surely a relationship must be a two way process.

For a true believer aren't prayers answered?

If it were real, answers would be instantaneous. It would be a two way conversation, when a christian prays. Instead, when a person hears voices, it's not the christian god, and medication is generally required.

    Not so much, for amputees.

Caedes: For a true believer aren't prayers answered?

There must not be many true believers around any more. Christians, Muslims, Jews, and other monotheistic believers get their fair share of misfortune and misery. If there's a God who "answers" their prayers, he's a stingy miser when it comes to granting happiness and other good stuff. Yes, the believers will say God knows what's best for us, even if we don't recognize it at the time. It's all part of the great tapestry God is weaving from human suffering. I'm sure that's a great comfort to victims of violence and their families. When God's great tapestry is finally revealed, it's going to resemble a Jackson Pollock painting.

Hey, God! I'm still waiting for that pony. And thanks for allowing some scrot to rob me and crack my head open when I was a kid. And for the pneumonia. And let's not forget being dragged into a cult for 14 years.

    Yeah, prayer really works.

I kind of think it's all one and the same. It involves communication with a spirit of choice and one does expect some kind of answer, one way or another. Just thinking it out. Thank you for your answers:)
