During Wars it has commonly been said among the Soldiers "their are no Athiests in Foxholes." So these men who may die soon pray to a God they didn't believe in just in case it "helps" them not get hit by a stray bullet or Mortar...is this a human fear condition.
Other example is people "converting" on the death bed...Constantine and Oscar Wilde {homosexual} comes to mind.
Have you seen, "Bill Cosby - Himself?".
If so, then you're familiar with the final joke in his routine. He says the scariest moment in the life of an adult human, is being at a party, going to the bathroom, and having the toilet start rising up, ready to overflow.
Further, he says that sane people will begin TALKING to the toilet, asking it not to overflow.
Religious?....no. Spiritual-minded?....yes. I think it's in our "DNA" to believe in an intelligence outside the visible physical realm. As people abandon the sky daddy god and realize that there are, however, subtle energies that intelligently move evolution along in the play of life, the belief in God is becoming more and more logically based for those that need a rational reason to believe.
I FEAR A METEOR MIGHT CRASH INTO EARTH AT ANYTIME....but wait! god is watching over us. Phew, close call.....but he did allow Saturn to be hit this week by an earth sized Meteor...must be cause there are no Christians there!

This is because God is so widespread in the culture that anyone that is even the slightest bit religious is going to call on God during a crisis. Of course, God is not going to be with them--why else would some of them die or become horribly disabled and suffer greatly while others are hardly touched? And the ones that get badly hurt are the ones that could be more religious.
About all God does is tells people that it is going to be all right, without doing anything to make sure. People will fall for this scam, which gives them a measure of comfort just before they die or get badly hurt. Pretty much like people finding comfort after falling for any regular scam, before they see that it is a scam.
