They can be deadlocked by an even number, which means more "lunch time bullying" before the afternoon revote.

Nine gives them the clear "two thirds" majority, to push through the unpopular reforms which more than one of us supspects are coming.

Some of them were posted here first - change in generation, 1935 for the annointed, blood fractions, getting rid of the Bookstudy(but unfortunately not the BS)

Hammy, you always make me laugh! Thank you.

I agree with you... 9 is a perfect number to get what they want.

It's always risky to add new members to such a powerful group. Ideology can shift over time - just look at all the "surprises" that have come from US Supreme Court appointments.

There seems to be some sort of wavering on the GB - on the one hand, they "lightened the load" on the publishers by killing one meeting night per week, but at the same time they have come out as strong or stronger than ever against education and associating with DF'ed relatives. It might be that there 2 or 3 "swing votes" that go one way or the other on their policy votes.

Adding even one person might upset that delicate balance - it would be very interesting to be a fly on the wall when potential new members are considered.

For a "non-political group", there sure is a lot of politics.

Wasn't it 18 at some point in the early / mid 70's?

Yes it was 18 for a while in the 70s.
