Saw this movie Saturday, and enjoyed very much. Though the anti-Apartheid message was 20 years too late and just a tad heavy-handed. The movie takes you one a journey in which an alien ship hovers over Johannesburg, South Africa. Unable to communicate with the ship, the local authorities enter the ship and discover aliens living in the ship that are ill and malnurished. They are then transported into District 9, an alien ghetto. The film briefly chronicles the interactions between the aliens and humans, leading to the aliens eviction from District 9. This is the catalyst in which the mid-level manager is promoted to handle the eviction. This process eventually leads to circumstances that involve the manager and an alien.

I loved the use of documentary style filming. This changes to traditional filming technisues about halfway through the movie. The dialoge was crisp, and the action was riveting. However, the best part of the movie was the ending. The movie was not wrapped up in a nice bow, like in Independence Day, but rather left you with a sense of uncertainty, and that was refreshing. Check it out.

Hey XJW4EVR, finally a video thread that doesn't spoil the movie. I saw it too but felt exactly the opposite. I thought the Mockumentary format drug. It was well done but it seemed disjointed when it broke to the action movie. I like the old exposition where we have personal interactin between characters, say his wife and him, rather than recitation of facts ie: interviews for the documentary portion. When the action explodes it is engrossing. Then it ends on a whisper. Back to the documetary. It was good and unexpected as you said. It was refreshing yes. I reccommend it too. Go see people and make up your own mind and tell us what you think. (Damn prawns.) You'll see. W.Once

I was all into it until I read a bunch of reviews and realized it didn't deal with actual hard science fiction ideas, but a parable about apartheid. Why would you construct a science fiction setting to do that? As Ebert brought out, that's just space opera. And the documentary style sounds a bit gimmicky... like Cloverfield.

    daniel-p,

:I was all into it until I read a bunch of reviews

Leave it up to reviewers to spoil what would otherwise have been a perfectly enjoyable entertainment experience.

I'll most likely still see it, but I usually read reviews to at least get a feel for what I'm seeing these days. Trailers can be misleading.
