Stylites or Pillar Saints. By far the most celebrated are Simeon the Stylite of Syria, and Daniel the Stylite of Constantinople. Simeon spent thirty-seven years on different pillars, each loftier and narrower than the preceding. The last was sixty-six feet high. He died in 460, aged seventy-two. Daniel lived thirty-three years on a pillar, and was not unfrequently nearly blown from it by the storms from Thrace. He died in 494. Tennyson has a poem on Simeon Stylites.
"I, Simeon of the Pillar by surname.
    Stylites among men- I, Simeon,
The watcher on the column till the end."

I think these guys were the heretofore untraceable "God's organization" during the early Medieval period. They had no part of the world, and were too emaciated to take up arms. Meeting attendance may have been somewhat sketchy, though.

I have often thought about this. JW's pride themselves on being so much more righteous than worldly people, yet in reality they are far less so than people even from a few generations ago. The average person from the 1950's would be horrified at the music, language, clothing and movies watched by Witnesses these days.

It was only 40 years ago that many JWs thought the Beatles were worldly and should not be listened to, now most young JWs would think that is the clean music and boring.

JWs are no better than worldly people, their standards are just a couple of decades removed.

JWfacts we are talking about a time when TV itself was only allowed to film Elvis from the waist up so avoiding ladies being effected by his gyrating hips unnessarily. Lets not apply modern standards to older times when the whole world was culturally a different place with different standards of acceptibility in public if not behind closed doors.

    reniaa,

:Lets not apply modern standards to older times when the whole world was culturally a different place with different standards of acceptibility in public if not behind closed doors.

Yet the WTS has no problem applying OLDER standards to MODERN times when the whole world was culturally a different place with different standards of acceptibility in public if not behind closed doors. Older standards that are THOUSANDS of years old.

You cannot have it both ways. Oh, wait! You're a dub! Dubs can not only have it both ways, they can have it ANY way they want. It's just that they don't want anyone else to be able to do that.

    Beheadings at birthdays, anyone?
