This young teen was killed in a hunting accident in Alaska. No foul play.. I read this article and she seemed like a lovely girl, very devoted to being a JW. But, I was wondering what was up with this Bible Education Fund in the last sentence? What do you all think?

Anyone wishing to contribute toward Hannah’s ministry may do so in memory of her through the “Hannah Frye’s Bible Education Memorial Fund” Bank account No. 70555891 at First National Bank of Anchorage.

There's got to be a link to the WB&TS.

The eulogy has got a definite "yuk" factor even though the death of a young girl in these circumstances is tragic.

BTW...My understanding is that sport game hunting is not acceptable to J W's?

I know that cultures vary a lot between here and Alaska (Sarah Palin and all that!) but there is supposed to be one rule for all J dubs. Unless the meat is to be eaten as food, they are not supposed to do it. Were they really going to bring home the carcass? Of course it would have to be drained of blood, no mean feat with a moose.

Still a very sad story though...

I do not think the money appeal is a big deal. Families often do that instead of having flowers at the funeral,

The culture in Alaska is different than most other areas, if you get right down to it. In fact, a lot of more remote ares in the US are much different than most populated areas. Hunting is a way of life for a lot of these people, no matter what the Society says. I've known many a brother who hunted. Most for food, some for sport.

Well, the question for me is, just what is the "Bible Education Memorial Fund". Where does the money go? I can't help but think that this money will end up at the Society. Donating money instead of flowers for this "Bible Education Fund" isn't like donating money to a hospice or cancer society or some other worthwhile charity. This is money that's going to their bank accounts and does absolutely no one any good. Dead flowers are just as likely to provide comfort for the sick and dying as the Watchtower Society is.

Hannah's ministry is the Watchtower, so why not just have donations asked to be sent there?

Have they started something new, I am wondering.

    Tragic situation for all.

Cynical, but maybe they think they will get more public donations by this relatively benign camoflage-account, and then can later give it to the Society.

Such misdirection is not at all uncommon in "charity solicitations".

BTW, if ANYBODY believes that JWs actually "hunt for purpose of gathering food - rather than SPORT", then they should buy some lottery tickets on the sale of the Brooklyn Bridge or the Eifel Tower.

EDIT - and if anybody (JW elders) around this tragedy gets up on the platform and uses this to denounce hunting - let them receive exactly what they deserve for being insensitive morons.

I was glad that I did not see some angry anti-wittness comments on that one. There is a time and a place for that type of response, and this is not it. She appeared to be a very quality young lady and if she were not a JW I am sure she would be a pride of a daughter to have.

I suspect anything sent to that account would be dropped in the collection plate donation box at the local KH.

It is true that Alaska has a different culture than the lower 48. The climate, seasons, remoteness from population and closeness to the land contribute to the difference in culture. I love it there, but must qualify that by saying I have never spent a winter there.

Here is a Homer web cam I like to monitor.

Ya, I know at least 50 witnesses who hunt for food. Men and Women. Canadians and Americans. And they drain the blood and process it too.

And I don't know anyone who sport hunts. Sport Fish yes.

I hunt for food. We live no where near Alaska.

    Sad accident.

I am sure her family is going to give the money to the society. They probably think it is quite appropriate.
