The End Is Near.......

Well not the end of the world!

But lets think like JWs for a minute! They clutch at every negative news item to show that the end is near. I heard it in connection with the WTC disaster. You see it in the magazines. It is more prevalent at the meetings where there is more license to stir up the emotions.

But take a look at the WTS. The figures are so poor in the countries where it matters. They may get some growth in third world countries but these are largely 'unprofitable' areas. They are probably more of a drain on the resources of the WTS than anything else. The decline in the richer areas means falling revenues and by and large fixed costs of halls, conventions etc. Not good.

Whats worse IMO is the lack of leadership in the WTS. If this was a corporate entity the board/CEO would have been ousted long ago. How bad does it have to get before someone calls 'time' on the aged 'GB'. A move into the mainstream makes sense but is not going to support the rigidity of WTS life of 5 meetings a week etc. People will leave in increasing numbers. We have not felt the fall out of the WTS-NGO saga yet. That will be seen in next years yearbook.

Taking it as a whole, and thinking like a JW(!), you would say that the 'end is near'...'the evidence is unmistakable' etc.

Don't forget that the reason why most of us are here was the 1975 stuff..directly or indirectly via our parents. Upto that point the WTS was pretty nondescript. The WTS is plunging into a deeper hole this time. Granted it may take time. But the end is near...around the corner....on the horizon....in your lifetime....in someones lifetime.

JW's are in decline, but what does it mean, really?

JW's are just one pathetic expression of fundamentalism. Even if JW's decline, other brands of hate and exclusionary belief will prosper.

Banding together into a tight group is older than homo sapiens. Gorillas, chimps and bonobos gather into tribes and wage war. Often, these opposing tribes are composed of former life-long friends, even siblings. Grouping together in this way, separating ourselves into the many sub-groups that we do, enhances our chances for survival, and is thus woven into our very genetic behavioral structure.

As humans, however, we can use our brains and decide to change that behavior. First, we must acknowledge where it came from, and the need to leave it behind. But, it does not appear that we are ready to do that, as a species, though we seem to be moving in that direction.

Violence, and distrust of strangers, and groups of strangers, keeps many forms of mammals alive. Including the primate homo sapiens. Modern society, our intellect, this very internet, can be used to change that.

Before we had dealings with some JWs we didn't have distrust of strangers. But now it seems that every time we meet people who dress well, we wonder if they've got evil things on their mind, to the harm of our family. I imagine it'll take some time to get over it and trust people at their word again.

As for the end of the world thing, well, what a shameful bunch of crap they've been given up to, though I hope they don't tone it down - so the pit is clearer for the passers by.
