I was just reading an article about how what we think and believe affects our self-esteem and well-being. The first step is understanding the types of thinking that can hold you back.

    TWISTED THOUGHTS

    1. OVERGENERALIZATION: We take a one-time occurence and make it the rule of thumb.

    2. BLAME GAME: We blame ourselves when we could not possibly bear responsibility.

    3. BLACK & WHITE THINKING: We interpret everything as an absolute, with no shades of gray.

    BACKWARD BELIEFS

    1. PERFECTIONISM: We must always perform at peak level and never make a mistake.

    2. UNFOUNDED FEARS: We are afraid without good reason of certain people, places, situations or scenarios.

To counteract this, we have to first re-think: Identify how the thought or belief is not based in fact. Revise the thought or belief to be a more accurate reflection of reality. Determine what action, if any, might be taken to improve your situation. Write a more positive affirmation on an index card and refer to it regularly. Seek out and accept honest feedback. Surround yourself with people who can help you reprogram your thought.

The more what you think and believe is aligned with genuine reality, the more balanced and healthy your life can be.

Sorry, I've been thinking about this topic all day and I guess it interested me because it seems that all 5 of those types of thinking listed there are such an integral part of the JW religion.

The blame and guilt is heaped on you at every meeting. And they definately see NO shades of gray. The striving for perfection and the fears - of worldly people, of the internet, of bad association, of working secularly too much (or not enough).........

It makes my head spin. No wonder I was so unhappy for so many years.

I know what you mean w the negative and twisted thinking. They are all bad thinking habits that a person can learn from parents, the jw religion, etc. The thinking can hold a person back from doing things. I also work on breaking those habits.
