Is it possible to take a video that is on youtube and just use small portions of it? How? What software would I need? (yes, this is for class but I want to just use a few minutes of an hour long video on cults.)

I don't know how either but I found a video that may lead you to the right direction. Go to videos on bing put in (burn youtube videos to dvd) in to the search engine.
A little experimenting; may be you will figure it out.
May be you can record and delete parts or just keep track of the parts by number and just play them?
