As a JW, I'm sure we all realize now that our "spirituality" was gauged by your meeting attendance and how many hours you put in field service. To JW's it seems to be a mechanical thing. As a JW I could relate somewhat to the word because of what it meant in that scenario, but now that I'm out and an unbeliever I cannot relate to the word in any way. Sometimes I see posts where the person's "spirituality" is not connected to any religion and possibly without belief in a god. I cannot understand that, I have need for the concept, period.

In doing a search using the word, I came up with this:

Considering the above, it seems the word is always tied into religion or believing in invisible beings. Is it something other than that to some? Using the above definitions it's no wonder I have no need for it.

    Greetings, starting:

I identify particularly with the above.

Of course, there is a so-called distinction between being religious and spiritual. Not that I get much of this any more than you. You've probably heard that religion is for people afraid of hell and spirituality is for those who've been there. Talking freely with those of widely divergent beliefs is now a pleasure as there is no compulsion [coercion?] to "direct sheeplike ones to the Organization." Hate that phrase!

    Thanks for an interesting post.

This is probably the closest, although I would remove the phrase 'often religious' from it as I don't agree that religion has anything to do with Spirituality. It never has with me. To me, religion is an add-on that isn't required. Religion is man-made and didn't always exist.

Stephen Covey describes Spirituality as the 4th human need -- "To Leave a Legacy".

Do you feel there is something you could do, some contribution you could make, some legacy you could leave that would impact your family, your work team, your organization, your community, your society in a positive way? If so, then do it.

To help others ultimately helps ourselves find fulfillment, enlightenment, and growth in our own spirits.

I relate to this definition far more than anything taught by religion about some super all powerful 'god' who is going to exact a judgment of me if I don't fly right based on something written thousands of years ago that I had no input to. It does align with many holy writings (and not just Christian) which talk of love and helping those less fortunate.

Thanks for the comments, and especially the link Nic. I think I lean towards Terry's comment: "I prefer the term AESTHETIC instead of SPIRITUAL"

Spirituality is different things to different people, don't let anyone tell you what YOUR spirituality should mean or be defined as, that is up to YOU and no one else.

spirituality has to do with how we deal with disaster and I agree that this involves aesthetics particularly an aesthetics of the sublime. Being reduced to nothingness and then rising above only to fall again - rising and falling. Religion imo does have a part in this
