Just heard that elders can now discuss confidential matters on cell phones.

Can anyone else confirm the veracity of this? Or, am I late to the party and this is old news?

As it it were safer in the days of landlines when elders' wives and children listened in.

Yeah it was a joke, for many.

I missed it too. The sad fact is that elders shouldn't be handling anyone's personal life, whether it be on a cell phone, land line or in person.

So-called 'landlines' are/were no more secure than cell phones.

I remember a few years ago, I had one of those older TV sets that had a UHF tuner that went up to channel 83 - or so.

I could tune it up to the upper channels and pick up folks in a small town just south of us - talking on their home phones - or 'landlines'. Unbeknownst to these folks, ma bell was putting their conversations onto the upper frequencies, and broadcasting them - to a remote receiver.

I was able to eavesdrop on these conversations - hearing personal details - but mostly gossip.

Of course - the folks in the WTBTS don't have enough knowledge about how the real world works to know that things like this happen every day - and so only pick on the portable phones - or cell phones.

The 'cell phones are okay' ruling may have changed about the time that all cell phones went digital, which would prevent many folks from eavesdropping with only a scanner.

    Regards,

Why are they discussing private affairs in the first place? The hounders should not be discussing among other hounders this kind of material--which should be between those involved alone. As I see it, I don't have a problem with masturbation, fornication, stumbling others, "loose conduct", or "uncleanness". I have a big problem with hounders that think they need to root out every instance of the above from the flock.

Yeah, there was a BOE letter 2 or 3 years ao on this.

Basically, it gave the OK to use cell phones, even when calling the Society. The explanation was, in the old days (you know, the 1990's ) it was relatively easy to "eavesdrop" on a cel phone conversation, if you had the right equipment, but nowadays the technology is secure enough that it is not a concern.

Prior to that letter, if you called Bethel to talk to the Service Desk, the first question, before even asking for your name or congregation, was "are you talking on a cel phone?" If the answer was yes, they'd make you hang up and call back on a land line.
