How Witnesses Handle College

  Alas, for the Governing Frauds! So many Witnesses have realized that they ain't gonna get a decent job without college. Yet, the problem remains: how can I explain myself amidst so much cultish peer pressure?

  "I'm taking some classes" ( In what, yoga? Are they classes in a college?)

  " I'm not going for a degree" (unless the job I want requires it)

  or the most ridiculous excuse, in the case of a daughter getting an advanced degree in classical music, "she could play in the Society's orchestra".

  You need to go to college in order to get a job that pays well enough for you to support yourself as a pioneer! And tell them you're going for a degree in something that will be needed in the New World. Dubs certainly won't need people with advanced degrees in "Worldly Classical Music"!

  Nobody needs an advanced degree to play in the bOrchestra! What a load of crap. Like she's got a letter from Ted Jaracz begging her to study classical music? Duh! She only needs to send a letter and an audition tape where she plays her instrument or instruments of choice to some of the kingdumb songs, preferably a few with piano to show intonation. No big deal, I think every bethelite knows that. She can even call Patterson and ask for Ted Adams in Audio Video Services. I think he's probably still in charge of music crap there. Now you saved that daughter all the trouble of pursuing a degree. Now she can take her accordian and head right to one of the music recording sessions. *barf*

  You couldn't talk about it at all. You couldn't comment openly about it. In fact, when one of my ex-friends got his Masters, the elder saying the prayer at the party thrown for him couldn't even talk about college in the prayer! It was one of the most awkward prayers I'd ever heard.

  I remember going back to College to get an additional degree (already had one prior to coming a dub). A local needs talk convinced of this. It was titled "each of us needs to carry there own load". This was taken from a scripture of course and the elder mentioned from the platform that we cannot expect that the congregation nor the org to help us pay for our kids or house etc...etc... I thought really???!!! Well then, I went back to school on hearing this and am happy to say that it really paid off. Of course, I was still in the org when I went back, and of course at that time I remained relatively quite about my night time education, knowing on how some look at higher education. Some will say that your weak in the truth. (By the way, I simply hated that term 'weak'), some say it is a tool from Satan, there's no guarantee that you'll get a job and so on...

  One of the most damaging proclamations coming out of the WTS. was that college and universities were a waste of time not

  only for the witnesses also they are also places of dangerous godlessness. This proclamation still holds today perhaps in a more muted way then

  the past. The WTS still would rather have all of their flock forgo this venture and go out in the ministry, well because the end is still so near near near.......

  In other non-jws families going to college is admired and respected for making an effort to improve one's own intellect and knowledge .

  So many lives were ruined in the past because of this manipulation of peoples minds.

  Also a favorite of mine were those that claimed they were going to college to get a skill to get into bethel. That worked best for sisters going into nursing or brothers going into law. Of course, most of them never get around to applying to bethel after they got their degree, because then they have to work to pay off student loan, then suddenly they have a family and mortgage... and a good job that pays well... and they never realize their "dream" of being in bethhell.
