the neighbor down the hill approached my
16 YO son at school and asked him what
was up with our wireless.... they have been
pirating for ages and suddenly they cant get on!!!!

well, we had an electrical storm that took out the router
as well as 3 television sets! i got a new router but needed
the savvy of a tech-geek teen to get the bluddy thing to
work so we went a few months just hooked directly to the modem....
finally got a little wiz to do all sorts of tinkering and tweaking
but finally we are wireless again, but this time password protected....

this aforementioned neighbor had said to my son:
we are leaving in about 5 months and dont want to
pay for wireless so maybe we can pay part of the bill....
(in actuality there are 2 households on the same property...
siblings and their spouses in separate homes)

for my part, i am not interested in sharing....
i am an online college student spending TOO much
time at the computer anyway... and it has not escaped
my notice that my computer is MUCH faster now that
only my household is using the wireless.... so i am not
eager to have more traffic slowing me down....

i know the old saying: if you don't ask, you don't get...
but i am thinking this is a little over the line....
    (maybe i ASK for back-pay!!!)

    cheeky or not?

If it's not protected, you've got to assume someone is going to logon, so I don't think you can ask for restitution but it is damn nervy of them to actually admit that they were hijacking your signal and wanting to know if they could keep doing it...

I'd tell them to go fornicate themselves...

It's a good idea to keep it locked down. The main reason is because YOU are legally reposnible for all of the internet traffic that comes through your hookup.

If someone hooks into your wireless and looks and kiddy-porn, YOU go to jail become a registered sex offender.

If someone pirates a bunch of movies, YOU get hit with the lawsuit and fines.

If you do share your wireless with anyone, have them sign a legal document outlining terms of usage and acknowledging their liability for their actions. Find a good teckie kid to find a way to log the neighbor's usage and keep for your records.

That is what you should tell them. Thanks, but no thanks. Now, if they want to pay for the previous months' free ride and an advance for the additional five months, tell them that may work.
