Down in the valley, not to far from here,
Lived a small little family, who did not have Christmas this year,
You might think they were Buddist,
Or perhaps just a Jew,
Yet all those would be wrong,
For they are a religion you hardly knew.
While you set and enjoyed the time with those you loved.
They set in their house, thinking they were above
Above you in knowledge
Above you in faith
Living in a world that sees them as the only ones who will excape.
Did you fill guilt with that present,
Did you will shame with that meal,
Was the tree something you hid,
Or did you say Merry Christmas only in shadows?
Yet down in the valley
Not too far from here
Set a family, who did not celebrate Christmas at all this year.
Did they find any joy in that day,
With something positive to say,
Giving back to this world, with even a moment of their time to share?
Or, did they sit in their home
Laying out their magazines
Their books, or their clothes
Hoping that others would follow them soon?
Perhaps even me or you.
Know in your heart
Why you choose to know what you know
Why you accept what you see
But know this now too,
At this time of the year,
That what you see in this life
What you hope for and love,
Could be in that valley next year
Not far from here
With the family who ignored Christmas
Who ignored it out of fear
Just remember to keep your eyes open
Your ears listening,
Your knowledge expanding,
And you will spend next year,
Right here,
With all the right cheer.
And let that family in the valley
Not far from here,
Spend Christmas alone,
Year after year.
