That whole "Jehovah hates a divorce" thing bothered me. I personally knew of abused wifes and would give counsel to get a divorce. Other elders would play the JHAD card and guilt them into continuing in the abusive relationship.

One abusive husband probably doesn't know how close I came to firing on him for prowling around my house one night. He had made previous threats with a gun and was a nutcase. I was locked & loaded and ready to fire into his grill if he pulled into my driveway.

They are probably back together and him an elder somewhere.

I remember whilst I was still studying that a woman used to come to the KH regularly with black eyes and busted lips. it looked awful. I tried to find out what her situation was and how we could help her but was shot down in flames. At my next Bible study, I brought it up and said how I found it uncomfortable that everyone just kind of 'ignored' her situation even though it ws obvious. The reply I got was that there was no scriptural grounds for separation or divorce and she would possibly win her husband over by showing him 'respect'. I said 'how can you respect someone who does that to you? No answer really apart from we have to put faith in Jehovah etc etc. Anyway, turns out my 'fleshly'sister new the family and was so concerned for the children that she reported them to Social Services, who intervened and insisted that he leave the family home, or the kids we be put into care. All in all a good outcome but not from the witnesses, they would have let the kids be damaged by their weekly visions of dad beating up mum.JWs have moved on from then, but it is only because society has dictated it - it has not been them at the forefront.

'Headship' and subjugation of a wife to her husband were part of the main reasons for me not joining the JWs. I saw first-hand in my own family how it did NOT work between husband and wife (my father and mother). I wanted more from life. I wanted a collaborative partner, not a dictator and 'master'. 'Headship' is NOT Win-Win.

'Headship' grants absolute power to the man. And absolute power corrupts absolutely.
