    I. Behavior Control

    1. Regulation of individual's physical reality

    a. Where, how and with whom the member lives and associates with
    b. What clothes, colors, hairstyles the person wears
    c. What food the person eats, drinks, adopts, and rejects
    d. How much sleep the person is able to have
    e. Financial dependence
    f. Little or no time spent on leisure, entertainment, vacations

    2. Major time commitment required for indoctrination sessions and group rituals

    3. Need to ask permission for major decisions

    4. Need to report thoughts, feelings and activities to superiors

    5. Rewards and punishments (behavior modification techniques- positive and negative).

    6. Individualism discouraged; group think prevails

    7. Rigid rules and regulations

    8. Need for obedience and dependency

    Let's see:

1 a. Not so much where but with whom (if not married and want a roommate should be with a JW of good standing of the same sex). Associates? Should only associate with JWs in good standing

    b. See the Bethel guide to attire & grooming. See the KM convention insert where members are discouraged from wearing shorts & jeans after teh convention and encouraged to wear the name badge. Lots of individual congo rules regarding dress. Attendants & those giving PTs MUST wear suits. etc.

    c. Not really

    d. Not really

    e. No

    f. Absolutely! Lots of written "counsel regarding keeping entertainment in "its proper place".

    2. - 10 hours per month in service and attendance at both meetings + family study or your not good association.

3 - Must consult WT pubs when making major decisions. Don't have time to dig up references but in addition to written, there are the talks which say the same thing.

4 - Yup - confess your sins and those of others.

5 - Rewards - privileges, status... Punishment - loss of status, shunning

    6 - yup

    7 - yup

    8 - yup

So, step 1 of identifying a cult = Yes to JWs

Oh, cool! A 4-part thread!! At first, I thought it was just a duplication...

Doubting Bro : "See the KM convention insert where members are discouraged from wearing shorts & jeans after teh convention and encouraged to wear the name badge...."

You have GOTTA be kidding me... Relax. I know you're not... That's SO TYPICAL of the WTBTS' thinking...

I could NEVER understand why the WTBTS wanted all of its members to look like they were stuck in a time capsule from the 1950's.... Always suspected that the Gov.Bod were enamored of the dreary, hypocritical, buttoned-down repressed '50's...

JIMMY- Your good buddy Robert here, LOL ! Kidding, Mr. Flipper. Good points you bring out, thanks for posting.

I feel the final 3 points are REALLY strong WT society tendencies they instill in Jehovah's Witnesses especially.

    6. Individualism discouraged, group think prevails. - I saw this SO MUCH in the witnesses. I remember remarking to elders at times about injustices or disagreeing with a point made . I'd just be told " wait on Jehovah , he'll reveal new light when it becomes clear. " I felt like saying " It's clear NOW ! " But I'd be looked at with a crooked eye for having an independent mind.

    7. Rigid Rules & Regulations - My god . It was incredible. I remember barely growing a days growth of a moustache and an elder told me " I'm thinking of using you on a circuit assembly part , you'll need to shave that off, it looks like dirt ! " Or the elder who told me I couldn't carry microphones because I wore " white socks" not " colored socks ". My ex-wife a fanatic JW threw out the movie " Jaws " thinking it would corrupt our young teenage children. Then she threw out my Led Zeppelin T-shirt with the blimp on it ! Bitch. People had loads of individual rules crawling out of their a$$ .

    8. Need for obedience and dependency - Yep. Totally. If you weren't reular out in service on Saturday mornings or hit and miss at meetings you were considered " disobedient " . And the REASON they wanted us to be at all the meetings was so we WOULD be dependent on the elders and WT society for EVERYTHING. It's part of the control game they play with people's lives. Sick stuff. Glad I'm out, and many of you ! Peace out, Mr. Flipper

When I first started waking up, the one line that stuck with me from one of the assemblies is a prime example of how behavior control is very much alive. The circuit overseer said, practically yelled it at the audience, "You don't deserve a vacation! That's Satan's thinking!" Of course, no one else seemed to notice. But that one, I filed away under "something is very wrong here".
