I must admit that this surprised me. I've personally never noticed a connection.

    Study Links Religion and Racism

    . . .

A meta-analysis of 55 independent studies carried out in the United States with more than 20,000 mostly Christian participants has found that members of religious congregations tend to harbor prejudiced views of other races.

In general, the more devout the community, the greater the racism, according to the authors of the analysis, led by Wendy Wood, Provost Professor of Psychology and Business at USC College and the USC Marshall School of Business. The study appears in the February issue of Personality and Social Psychology Review.

“Religious groups distinguish between believers and non-believers and moral people and immoral ones,” Wood said. “So perhaps it’s no surprise that the strongly religious people in our research, who were mostly white Christians, discriminated against others who were different from them — blacks and minorities.”

It doesn't surprise me in the least.

I know some Black people - JW's and others - who are fervently religious, yet speak disparagingly of other groups.

The first time I heard a JW make racist comments, I was deeply shocked.

Absolutely! It's part of the formula. The Us vs "Them" mentality.

I bet if I did a study of *Pots* and asked them how they viewed *Kettles* I could come up with some pretty interesting stats also.

I wonder why they only looked at *Christian* participants and not, say, Muslims?

Interesting how results can be skewed. But, being the *Intelligent* Ex-JWs we all R, we all knew that, didn't we?

*Intelligent* based upon Minimus' lastest definition.

The 'Us' vs 'Them' mentality disturbed me a lot when I was studying with the JWs. It never sat well with me. After leaving home and getting a job where I work with all different people from different cultures and religions, I realized I was lied to about the wickedness of other religions and other cultures. It simply wasn't/isn't there in the people I worked/work with.

I think JWs do this to create a 'special' and unique group. "See? We aren't like all those other heathens and evil-doers! We are God's Chosen." It's a marketting tactic to get people to sign up. They also use it to frighten people. If you're not one of God's Chosen, you're going to be annihilated at Armageddon.

I know other faiths do the same thing. I have been told so by people in these faiths. The good thing is that people from other faiths see the fallacy in this belief as well, just like we do.
