As a non-JW, I am only beginning to grasp the real force of what I deem to be evil triplets, shunning, no contact with worldlies, and conditional love. If you leave, you won't have any outside contacts and you will lose your family and friends; but, in the meantime, you are damned certain that you can't be sure they won't be taken away from you at any moment.

I think that the fact that true love and friendship can really develop among witnesses is a triumph of the human spirit. How sad that anyone needs to bear all this.

Add the mind-conditioning that makes you question your own thinking and it's a real dismal place to be.

That's why it's always good to hedge your bets. If I'd burned bridges with my non-JW friends (which almost happened), then I'd be in a very bad place.

It's also good to know when to cut your losses. If you see your investment in the religion starting to demand excessive additional capital with no guarantee of additional return, it might be better to get out. Yes, you still take a bath on your investment. But, it will only be on the initial investment. No need to also take a bath on the additional investment.

The thought of having no friends in “the world” is what keeps many from leaving, especially for those who were born into the Borg, like myself. There’s a scripture they use, which goes along the lines of “where else are we to go?” and that is what they sincerely think. I used to think that!

It’s only when your conscience, your mental or spiritual health, or your life is in danger, that you realise that there’s worse things than leaving the JWs.
