If you haven't heard, there is now a link to snapped Femurs in woman who have been on these drugs for a few years. Not only that, it has been found to kill the jaw bone.

The following link below is just one of many reporting on this problem.

My own mother in law snapped her Femur and now will never recover fully. She fell from a standing position in her own drive way.

Explained from another site: These drugs stop the body from reabsorbing old bone. So there is major build up of bone material, but the old bone not reabsorbed is very brittle instead of spongy in the center, therefore creating extremely brittle bones.

These broken Femurs in women looked like they had been in major car accidents, but had happened just by walking or falling from a standing position to the ground.

I saw this on the news Sunday - it says the problem is most extreme when the drug has been taken over four years.

They gave me Vit D in large doses instead..now I take a 50,000 unit every 30 days.

My MIL has what they call Hollow bones (In her 80's)..one day she was in the barn and fell, the Dr said many people think they fall and break the hip but actually the bone snaps (hip bone breaks) and they fall..it's the other way around, she didn't actually fall..

She was one of those that never gets sick..but since her hubby died she got shingles and suffered terribly for a year with them and then her hip broke, from what I hear it never did mend well after the operation and she walks with a walker..

A bone scan once every few years would be a good idea, but it sounds like the Boniva treatment is worse than the disease

The time to prevent bone problems is in your youth..get all the calcium you can to protect your bones..when you are later it is too late.

Edited to add: My MIL took all the natural vitamins and minerals and herbal remedies she could for her bones years earlier but the bones were still hollow and thin ..

I took Fosamax for about a year. Against my doctor's advice, I stopped taking it about 3 years ago when I read about a report that it might make the bones bigger, but makes them more brittle. I'm taking 1500 mg of calcium a day, plus magnesium and vitamin D. Also working out at the gym about 4 hours a week--much of that is with weights.
