Size of WT printing empire

I hear a lot of comments about the size of the Society's printing empire. Some persons have suggested that it is one of the largest in the world. I would like to dispute that statement.

The Society prints about 25 million copies of each mag, 48 issues per year. That means that they print about 38.4 billion pages of WT's and Awakes. If you add in books, brochures, KMs, etc, you probably end up around 50 - 60 billion pages. That seems like a lot, but is it?

    Consider the following:

USA Today: (2.3 Million circulation) x (64 page avg size) x (305 issues) = 44.9 billion pages Then consider that newspaper pages are about 3 times the size of WT pages, and it turns out that this one newspaper prints the equivalent of 135 Billion WT pages per year. It alone is more than double the size of the Society's printing empire.

Reader's Digest: Approximately 65 Billion pages in the magazine only. This does not include all of their other publications. By the way, RD estimates that each issue of their mag is read by 11 people. Contrast that with the WT (3/4 probably don't even get opened).

Southam News: Owns 57 dailies, and 150 weekly papers in Canada. By world standards it is a moderate sized newspaper empire. They print approx 200 Billion WT equivalent pages.

Quebecor: The largest printing company in the world. I don't know how much they print, but they host over 1 Billion UNIQUE web pages, and that isn't even their core business.

I live in a relatively small city, but even my little daily paper prints 8.8 Billion WT equivalent pages per year. In fact, this is such a small quantity, that the printing is not done locally. It is merged with other papers in larger cities, and shipped here.

So, by the standards of my desktop printer, they are pretty big. But, by the standards of world class printing companies, they really don't even rate. I suspect they look big, only because they are so inefficient.

    Hi,

Thay are the largest "in plant"
    producer of printed matter.

As for the profit business sector, they are peanuts.

    Howdy RM,

Interesting thread. Just inefficient peanut-sized printing company. How much do the other companies have to pay for employees, building contractors, lawyers, taxes, benefits, pension plans, health insurance, child care, etc? Even though the WTBTS is peanut sized - they have a lot of loopholes that the other companies don't have - which should make their profit margin much higher.

Unless they're complete idiots...which remains to be seen.

Awe, come on! "11 people" read each issue of the Reader's Digest? No way...........

    Waiting,
Hi! If you think about how many people read each issue of the RD, it doesn't seem unreasonable. May a hundred or more in each doctor's office each month at least. If a family of four gets it that is four readers in each family. What constitues reading the RD? Both my husband and I read some of it. My kids usually read the funny stuff. So the four of us "read" the magazine. You can work stats any way you want to, look how the WTBTS does it.

    Nice seeing you, BTW.

    Howdy Lindy,

Well, I hadn't thought of it that way. Do you receive an issue in your home, or a magazine? I thought an issue was the completed process, like Issue Number 12, and magazines could be printed as many as wanted of that particular issue.

That's what struck me as funny - I assumed a typo, as I would figure more than 11 people read an issue - like the November 4th Issue.
Now, 12 million people may read that magazine......but it was only issued once. Then different articles were made - making another issue.

The Society prints about 25 million copies of each mag, 48 issues per year. -rm
Of course, I could be wrong, because I've never thought about it that much. Either way, I was joking around. Enjoy your Spring Semester!

At one time (1978) a printing plant in Sparta Illinois run by World Color Press, was the single largest printing facility OUTSIDE the government printing office. The GPO still has the largest printing facility (by signatures, which is how this is measured as opposed to by page) The WTBTS's printing "empire" is indeed impressive, and they've got a HUGE profit margine as labor is one of the biggests costs in printing. If they actually own their presses out right, then the profit margine is astronomical.

    Hey Yeru,

If they actually own their presses out right,
It seems to me that I did read, at least in the usa, that the WTBTS owns their own presses. Randy Watter's information? Think so.
