Elderly Man Charged With Hate Crime Against Jehovah’s Witnesses

By Timothy Bolger on Apr 2nd, 2010

A 73-year-old Port Jefferson man was arrested Thursday after he poured motor oil onto the rear entrance of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Mount Sinai, Suffolk County police said.

William Frank Kelly told Hate Crimes Unit detectives that he intentionally did the damage, “believing that he was doing God’s work,” police said.

Kelly had been in contact with members of the congregation Tuesday evening at a function celebrating a Memorial of Jesus Christ’s death. At the function, Kelly questioned the Jehovah’s Witnesses belief and was asked to leave the celebration, police said.

Kelly returned to the scene early Wednesday morning and poured two quarts of motor oil onto the rear entrance of the building. The incident was captured on video surveillance equipment installed at the location. Members of the congregation discovered the damage later Wednesday morning.

Kelly was charged with criminal mischief as a hate crime.

He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.

I wonder why he was there, did someone invite him? I wonder what he did to be asked to leave?

Maybe something like this happened as what I received from a JW of a Memorial Mishap

Our memorial attendance was ordinary. The usual submarines. . . no partakers, BUT. . .something interesting happened when it came time to pass around the bread.

one of the studies of one of the pioneers happens to be a practicing catholic and was used to celebrating mass and partaking of the Eucharist. Apperently, he wasn't listening closely enough to the talk, and, he was in the very front row, extreem right side. the first to be handed the bread. . . .you get where I'm goin' with this, don't you ? ?

He was the FIRST person in the row to get the bread, SO, naturally, being the good catholic that he was, reached out and took a piece of the bread. . . The brother who gave him the plate almost slapped his hand ! He then said NO, You can't have any! There isn't enough to go around ! and then promptly took the plate out of his hand and passed it to the next person in the row ! ! I'm not kidding. You're hearing it from an eye witness. I was in the row just behind and saw it all.

Needless to say that when the wine came around, he was a bit hesitant to touch it and he CERTAINLY didn't drink from it !

The brother came up after the memorial and explained a bit more tactfully why it wasn't appropriate to eat the bread. We're still trying to recover....

The JWs have a habit of especially bringing in strangers and new people to come to memorial. It's almost like they are intentionally playing a joke on them with Memorial because the JW rules are so different.

When you pass out flyers to strangers and invite them to come without preparing them that your customs are different and extreme opposite of what they have been used to in other churches...that is just wrong. The ceremony should not be open to the "uninitiated". JWs intentionally make fools of them.

This guy probably did not like JWs making a fool of him...which they did.

The offense does not excuse his behavior because he certainly did not show a Christ-like demeanor in dumping motor oil at the door.

Some innocent person could have slipped in that and maybe become paralyzed for life.
