I suppose this is a stupid question about elders

I believe one of the harder pills for an unbeliever to swallow would be the idea of being in submission to the body of elders. We're just not used to the concept of a clergyman having authority over us in matters that are not spiritual and, even then, I know for a fact that many a Catholic will not do was the priest wants without any fear of being excommunicated. I suppose this is something you just have to accept if you're a JW. But, is the Watchtower aware that elders wield a lot of power, and that they can abuse it? Are there any real provisions in that regard?

Thank you people for any posts.

Oh yeah. WTS was built on wielding and abusing power. The Governing Body does it, the District and Circuit Overseers do it, the elders do it.
As long as the elders stay in line with the organization, WTS hopes they don't abuse the members too much but expects it.

WTS trains them to overlook some transgressions of their own Boys' Club, but to "use the rod" with the congregation.

WTS props them up to feel more "special" than any others in the local congregations.

I do think that the WTS knows what the elders are doing to people. I think it is sick. Especially when they use the cliche saying "We are directed by God's Holy Spirit." I think that some are sincere, and really want to do what's right, but the vast majority of them that I have known are power hungry perverts. SO frustrating to be in subjection to those hypocrites rather than God!

I think that's like asking if a hog likes mud. LOL

People can be into dominating other people, some a lot more than others. They get off on it. I've noticed it's often those ambitious types that often get to the top of the WTS heap, in spite of all the pious claims to humility and whatever.

As a former elder of many years...........the only Holy Spirit available is through His Word the Bible. ==1 Tim. 3:15, 16

Once you have served and heard/watched what some of these guys do...... you're deeply disturbed.

    Lozhasleft ,

You are not alone. Please, take in knowledge that there is recovery along the way. Its amazing a former elder and you R and File are on this JWN site sharing experiences. I think this is very enriching to all of us.
