When I was a teenager, Twister was a popular game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twister_(game). We had a couple of elders who used to bang on and on about how bad it was in local needs talks. They seemed convinced that if a group of young people were playing Twister, it was bound to descend into a mass orgy.

Does anyone else remember elders getting a bee in their bonnet about something like this?

I know there was a time where they didn't want anyone playing Chess. I guess the Ouija Board must have revealed to the GB how Chess promotes......I dunno what......masturbation or homosexuality I'm sure.

I remember my dad getting us the I Dream of Jeannie boardgame which we played all the time. I loved that game and wish I could find one now. Another game we used to play as kids was Trouble. They've actually brought it back.

I love twister it is great fun. Elders never had a problem with it here in Hampshire.

That was never allowed at our game nights because apparently it promoted frottage, and teenagers aren't mature enough to not make jokes about the physical nature of the game. We were very restricted in which games we could play -- though, oddly, I can quite clearly remember chess being played at most gatherings.

Oh, the arbitrary bull that dictated my past life...

Was this a regional/congregational thing, or did the GB actually come out against chess in writing?

There was an article in a 1973 Awake! that said that the game's history of providing soldier preparation, combined with its perceived violations of the command in Galatians to not be competitive or egotistical, make it inappropriate for Christians. They also suggested in the article that chess can make people become physically violent.

Like everything else JW-related, whether your congregation(s) chose to observe that unwritten rule or not was completely up to them. There's never any consistency with this stuff, so it's not surprising that some congregations are more lax about it. A lot of Witnesses have never even heard about the anti-chess warning.

We were never allowed a Twister, Chess was considered a war game. Ouija was demonic.

and dodge ball..well I just sucked at that. so I said I wasn't allowed to play.

Raised out side the JWs, my father said Twister was purely for sex parties, and had no other purpose. I don't remember others opinions.
