Disfellowshipping, "Cleanness" and Hockey

Witlesses commonly think that the practise of enforced shunning keeps their congregations morally "clean" but this is nonsense.

Do you need a new marriage mate? Get divorced and re-married and then go into the disfellowshipping "penalty box" for awhile! You then wait it out, write a sorrowful letter to the elders ...........and get back in, and you're OK.

Ask yourself, does the penalty box in hockey actually stop violence on the ice? Actually, professional hockey teams spend time in practice to know how to fight on the ice. They practice this along with other skills like shots on goal, moving the puck, etc.

You see, the penalty box is just part of the 'game' in both situations.

The Jews in Jesus day LOVED to practice shunning. Did it keep them morally pure? Did he think so?

Far from keeping Witlesses 'pure', it simply entrenches conformity to the Watchtower - which is its real goal.

Absolutely. The professed reason is NOT the REAL reason for enforced shunning. The REAL reason is due to the psychology of social conformity. If dissenters are allowed to speak freely, all but a tiny minority will feel free to think for themselves. Conformity will be out the window and the Borg's control over the rank and file will be destroyed.

This is a practice they will NEVER let go of. They may change the blood doctrine. They may someday re-emphasize Jesus again. They will NEVER stop shunning.

Thank NH Knorr for unleashing people's inner phobias and cultural hangups. The stories I could tell having been an Elder.

Scrubbing sin off with a Brillo Pad .......... yikes did that generation have some hangups.

And getting called for offsides is getting counciled by an elder

A two minute penalty is private reproof

A 5 minute major is public reproof

A game misconduct is getting disfellowshipped

I'm trying to figure out the hockey reference. Is being DFd and shunned kinda like being put in the penalty box? "you go to box...you feel shame"

I don't have enough fingers & toes to count the number of JWs I know who have "played the system" when they wish to rid themselves of a spouse they no longer care for.

The Society definitely knows this goes on - they occasionally send out stern letters if someone who played the game wishes to be reinstated as an elder or MS "too soon". But apparently it's not that big of a concern for them - aside from a once-a-decade or so reminder in a WT that "you really shouldn't do that brothers", it is ignored.

I like the hockey reference. Because this religion IS like a game to most of them, always jockeying for position.....
