Go to Gravatar.com and sign up upload an avatar confirm it and voila new avatar.

For me, I had to select a G rated avatar as the original one I selected, I rated it as PG-13 or PG. So it was defaulting to a monster id since apparently this site only supports G rated avatars.
Once I selected my G rated avatar, I clear the cached in my browser and reloaded the pages.
New avatar in place (I now look like Heathcliff).
Remember, you must use the same e-mail address that you used to create your account on this site. If you have any questions, let me know or just keep simply asking here.

This is an immediate tip off that something is out of whack. Look at the urls for your avatars. (view the source of gravatar page showing your avatar pic). They should match what is shown here on JWN (again view web page source).
