On a hot afternoon visiting in Coleman Texas, a family is comfortably playing checkers on a porch, until the father-in-law suggests that they
take a trip to Abiline (53 miles away) for dinner. The wife says, "Sounds like a great idea." The husband, despite having reservations
because the drive is long and hot, thinks that his preferences must be out-of-step with the group and says, "Sounds good to me. I just hope
your mother wants to go." The mother-in-law then says, "Of course I want to go. I haven't been to Abilene in a long time."
The drive is hot, dusty, and long. When they arrive at the cafeteria, the food is as bad. They arrive back home four hours later, exhausted.
One of them dishonestly says, "It was a great trip, wasn't it." The mother-in-law says that, actually, she would rather have stayed home, but
went along since the other three were so enthusiastic. The husband says, "I wasn't delighted to be doing what we were doing. I only went
to satisfy the rest of you." The wife says, "I just went along to keep you happy. I would have had to be crazy to want to go out in the heat
like that." The father-in-law then says that he only suggested it because he thought the others might be bored.
The group sits back, perplexed that they together decided to take a trip which none of them wanted. They each would have preferred to sit
comfortably, but did not admit to it when they still had time to enjoy the afternoon.

When we were JW's, didn't we take that trip?

Well, now that you mentioned it, it does sound like some days I had out in the field service.

Interesting story why people do what they do at times. I have to agree that this sure fits in what field service is. Ones go in the field service just to keep others happy.

Yes I now make it a rule to try to always be honest yet tactful when someone asks for my opinion. No more long trips to places I don't really want to go to for me.

Yes it's called GROUP THINK! Read the definition in Wiki or wherever, it describes JW's perfectly.

All those trips to the conventions, out of the way. We thought at the time that it would lead to new information that would lead to the carrot.

I'll never forget the road trip from Fort Worth to Kansas City for the District Assembly in 1969 right after I was parolled from Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution.

Everybody was so excited to be going.

But, the Convention was hot, boring and uninformative. Like listening to music at the wrong speed.

People under 30 spent all their time finding a seat-mate to sit with them during the sessions.

Then, the loooooong road trip back home with those interminable highways at night.

Why did we look forward to such a letdown and not see it for what it was? Simply because of the Fallacy stemming from Groupthink.

We think EVERYBODY ELSE is enjoying it and getting something wonderful out of it---it must JUST be ME!
