Sinking of S. Korea ship. Gulf of Tonkin part II?

Okay... someone is lying but who?

Naturally I am inclined to think Kim Jung Il is crazy enough to sink the S. Korean ship but if you really think about it what would N.Korea have to gain?

Furthermore. N. Korea's sabre rattling sounds like a nation that does not want to go to war. It sounds now like they do not wish a confrontation and are assuming a strong posture a la Reagan or Kennedy in the cold war.

Thoughts please? I do not know what to think of this one. I think the N. Koreans are crazy enough to pull off anything but there is nothing in this for them from what I can tell. China wants them there and is supporting them if we start this war again all that is up in the air.

Oh guess I should bring in the other side of the argument. What about S. Korea, Japan and the US... I can see several reasons why this "sinking" would play into their favor. Which leads me to suspect this may be another Gulf of Tonkin incident. A good Korean War II would really get this economy going. The draft would reduce unemployment, GM already owned by the government can build the Tanks. You see were this is going? Very FDR'ish.

Why would we want to start another war? We already have two. If anything having our military over-extented would make countries like Iran and DPRK think that they can get away with things.

    no no and NO!

if they wanted a war, why are they tip-toing around now? Imagine if Iran had sunk a british warship in 2005!

My guess: The dear leader is going to die soon and all the generals know it. He likely have a great problem controlling the military, and this is properly either an accident or a general who want to show off.

Its going to be interesting to see what happends in NK after Kim dies.

So I am the only one familiar with the military-industrial complex....

No it would not. It would be catastrophic, economically speaking, in a global sense. Additionally, I cringe over what would happen to the S. Koreans. I have great admiration for what that little country has accomplished over the last several decades.

Again and again, people fall for the "broken window" fallacy when it comes to wars and economics. Wars do not improve prosperity, overall. There are, of course, a few winners. But there are far more losers. Wars do not produce anything of any worth to anyone. They are only worth fighting when there is no other choice for survival.

True open peace is what creates true wealth. In every sense of the word.

I can see several reasons why this "sinking" would play into their favor.

Your use of scare quotes implies that the sinking was faked or that N Korea didn't do it. Do you truly believe this?
