Independent research might lead one to use sources such as encyclopedias, history books, research papers, and even the internet, all of which are tools of Satan designed to lead one away from the protection of Jehovah's clean organization. Would we to turn to such sources of "information", ignoring the fine spiritual food that has been provided by the faithful and discreet slave? (Matt. 24:45) Never may that be the case!

“These (the Bereans) were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore, many of them believed…" (Acts 17:11, 12).

Philippians 1
9 And this is what I continue praying, that YOUR love may abound yet more and more with accurate knowledge and full discernment; 10 that YOU may make sure of the more important things, so that YOU may be flawless and not be stumbling others up to the day of Christ, 11 and may be filled with righteous fruit, which is through Jesus Christ, to God’s glory and praise.

Jehovah's Witnesses - what's wrong with independent thinking?
Quote from your Watchtower:
"And just as in the first century there was only one true Christian organization, so today Jehovah is using only one organization. (Ephesians 4:4, 5; Matthew 24:45-47) Yet there are some who point out that the organization has had to make adjustments before, and so they argue: 'This shows that we have to make up our own mind on what to believe.' This is independent thinking. Why is it so dangerous? Such thinking is an evidence of pride. And the Bible says: 'Pride is before a crash, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.' (Proverbs 16:18) If we get to thinking that we know better than the organization, we should ask ourselves: 'Where did we learn Bible truth in the first place? Would we know the way of the truth if it had not been for guidance from the organization? Really, can we get along without the direction of God's organization?' No, we cannot!.. Fight against independent thinking." (Watchtower, January 15, 1983 p. 27).1983 "Avoid independent thinking...questioning the counsel that is provided by God's visible organization." (Watchtower, Jan. 15, 1983 pg. 22)
“Avoid Independent Thinking …Satan called into question God’s way of doing things. He promoted independent thinking. …How is such independent thinking manifested? A common way is by questioning the counsel that is provided by God’s visible organization. …Fight Against Independent Thinking …Yet there are some who point out that the organization has had to make adjustments before, and so they argue: ‘This shows that we have to make up our own mind on what to believe.’ This is independent thinking. Why is it so dangerous? Such thinking is an evidence of pride. …If we get to thinking that we know better than the organization, we should ask ourselves: ‘Where did we learn Bible truth in the first place? Would we know the way of the truth if it had not been for guidance from the organization? Really, can we get along without the direction of God’s organization?’ No we cannot!” —The Watchtower, January 15, 1983, pp. 22, 27

Yahweh scattered the organization of Israel to the four winds because their leadership had corrupted his word and he has not exclusively used another organization since. He has used various individuals and groups to keep his word alive, but not for the purpose of aggrandizing them and demonizing everyone else. There of course have been countless numbers who headed up organizations and who arrogantly and presumptuously claimed, by using a poluted form of his name, to take the place of his covenant people who he has now returned to their inheritance and with whom he will make a new covenant after the full number of gentiles have come in. Read Romans 11. Salvation begins with Jews, not hypocritical jw's founded by a drunken attorney who had been previously dismissed from the organization.

XPeterX Why doesn't the WTS encourage it?
All the evidence leads away from the WT.
The WT do not allow JWs to even read the bible without their "help".
If you read the bible on its own, there is absolutely no way you come up with the same (false) message the WT preach.
The whole of the message is about Jesus and that message is we need to come to Him.
John 5:39-40 (English Standard Version)
39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
2 Timothy 3:14-15 (New International Version)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Blessings,
Stephen
